What are the Benefits of Academic Coaching?

The concept of Academic Coaching has recently gained popularity, but its benefits are not yet fully understood. Academic coaching is a practice that involves many responsibilities, even though it is often used interchangeably. Its approaches and philosophies can vary, depending on the program’s identified needs. There is no set definition of academic coaching best practices, however. The CU Boulder academic coaching program was the campus’ first to offer academic coaching in the spring of 2016. Its leadership wanted to provide additional support for struggling students to help them adjust to college and get higher grades to enable them to pursue enriching experiences.

An Academic Coaching session begins with an assessment of the student’s learning style and habits, academic strengths, life management skills, and learning style. It may involve an Intake Interview, standardized tests, or a combination of these. Students and academic coaches then discuss SMART goals, and the best strategies to achieve them. Students are encouraged to examine their strengths and weaknesses, and to use them to learn new skills. The overall success of the coaching process is based on the trust between the student and the academic coach.
